(by Doug Gabelmann, PPRA President)
By mid-April, we deserve dessert. And the company of our friends and neighbours. Surviving winter warrants a reward and the Plant Pool Recreation Association (PPRA) is preparing that reward by once again organizing its annual Dessert Party. This year the party is on the premises of the old Plant Bath within the new Plant Recreation Centre, corner of Somerset and Preston Streets. It will be held in the afternoon (2pm to 4pm) of Saturday, April 14th, 2007.
The PPRA is a busy organization, developing and supporting recreational sports opportunities for neighbourhood children, especially. Plant Recreation Centre and Plouffe Park, in which it sits, serve a large area including Hintonburg, Laroche Park and, no doubt, parts of Westboro. Funds raised by the PPRA support summer outdoor and winter indoor soccer programs as well as basketball, swimming, a free drop-in summer day camp for 7 to 15 year-olds and other activities.
Last summer [2006], 34 seven to eleven year old boys and girls were able to benefit from professional soccer coaching provided by St. Anthony's soccer club because of the financial support of the PPRA . This past winter [2006-2007], funding from the PPRA helped 16 kids develop their soccer skills in an indoor program at the Adult High School.
This same winter [2006-2007], the PPRA took on the operation of the outdoor rink in Plouffe Park. The rink was a busy place during a six-week season abbreviated by warm January weather. Counting the number of skaters once per hour during the times PPRA volunteers staffed the change room yielded over 2,430 skaters. Many neighbourhood children took advantage of the used skates and loaner sticks and pucks collected by the PPRA.
Operating the rink earns the PPRA some of the money required for its recreational programs. Which brings us back to the Dessert Party. For five dollars you can enjoy a selection of donated home-made cakes, pastries and other delights plus a beverage. The five dollars will give a kid from your neighbourhood the chance to receive some valuable coaching, or just the opportunity to play in a safe environment. So come celebrate Spring 2007 with the PPRA, treat your sweet tooth and help the local kids!
Tickets are available at the door or from members of the PPRA (call 613-594-8332)
